Speaker: Paul Strevens, Technical Director
Paul has over 20 years of experience in the HVAC and valves industry and has been at HERZ Valves UK for over 6 years. His vast knowledge of valves certifies him as an adviser on valve applications and valve selections on many big scale projects. Paul has been a member of BSRIA Steering Groups for Energy Efficient Pumping Systems, Selection of Control Valves, Pressure Independent Control Valves, Differential Pressure Control Valves and Heat Interface Units. He is also a CIBSE accredited CPD seminar presenter on energy efficient balancing and heat interface units.

Topic 1 -Innovative HVAC Systems for Energy Efficiency (6.30PM to 7.15PM)
Prsented By – Daniel H. Nall, P.E., Vice President, Syska Hennessy Group
This presentation examines several different innovative approaches to HVAC systems that demonstrate significant improvements compared with conventional systems. These HVAC systems incorporate several first principles strategies to both increase the efficiency of the heating and cooling sources and also to reach desired environmental goals more directly. These principles include:
The projects demonstrating these approaches are of several types, laboratories, healthcare, office and high-rise residential. Strategies for reducing lift for compression refrigeration comfort systems are presented, one strategy utilizing ground-coupling to reduce condensing temperature, and the second approach involves tailoring chilled water temperature to cooling end-use (sensible cooling or dehumidification). Two projects presenting alternate utilization of thermal storage are presented, one using building systems for diurnal storage and the other using ground annual thermal storage to provide make-up heat for heat pump systems. Finally, two airside system approaches to minimizing reheat for dehumidification are presented. The systems are designed for high airflow, humidity controlled spaces that ordinarily rely on reheat to maintain conditions, but the presented configurations significantly reduce the need for reheat.
Learning goals for the presentation. After the presentation, the attendee should be able to:
